Thoughts on Syria:
The people of Syria are very friendly and happy to have you visiting their country, they love their President, he is young and has opened up their world by allowing computers, internet access, cell phones etc. However we couldn’t get on our blog or facebook while we were there? The guys still dress in red check scarfs and long gowns, women generally do have their heads covered here still, unlike Turkey, so Trev had to pick up a scarf and ring to fit in.
I dont like the desert myself and its a bit creepy with all the bunkers still, we followed a tank on the back of a truck, didn’t think much to the razor wire dividing Turkey and Syrian borders, saw soldiers with guns manning their posts in various locations, not scary just a bit creepy, especially when you see the road signs to Bagdad and Iraq within only a few hundred Km.. can’t believe I’m here really. Don’t get me wrong it really isn’t a scary place to be, its just a reminder of the times we are living in. If you had told me I would be 220km from Iraq, sitting on our motorcycle this time last year I would have said, “absolutely not”!
What the hell am I doing here, all in the quest for adventure!

Well even though we have only been here for 5 days we have seen quite a bit of Syria, we hadn’t planned a trip thru but as the ferry wasn’t running from Rhodos to Haifa we had to change our plans to get to Egypt.
Gas is really cheap here, back to $20. to fill the tank, no beer around so that makes it really cheap, hotels are still quite pricey although you can find the cheap ones if you search the back streets for $20-$65.
Our route took us into the city of Aleppo, we checked out the Citadel, very large and impressive, the city is congested and dirty but Im sure there was more to see there but we didn’t have any time. Onto Palmyra, this site is the best Roman Site we have seen yet, it is huge, set in the desert by itself, very angelic and well kept small town but a great historical site.
Long shitty ride cause the weather was cold, rainy and very heavy cross winds into Daraa, stayed at a great hotel there called the White Rose, what a find, we were cold and soaked and dirty by the time we reached there, only $60 US a night - onto Jordon..
Again I just want to say that the people of Syria were lovely and very friendly! If you like to be among the deserts of the Middle East then definitely pay it a visit, especially Palmyra.
So close to places we see in the news |
Riding This is what it is all about |
