The Church of the Divine Wisdom (Hagia Sophia in Greek) in Sultanahmet, is one of the most impressive and important buildings ever constructed. Its wide, flat dome was a daring engineering feat in the 6th century, and architects still marvel at the buildings many innovations.
Called Haga Sophia in Greek, Sancta Sophia in Latin, Aya Sofia in Turkish, it was built on the site of Byzantine Accropolis in 537 AD. Aya Sophia was the greatest church in Christendom, being the worlds most impressive building, its no wonder that Mehmet the Conqueror proclaimed it a mosque soon after his conquest of the city from the Byzantines in 1453..
What always fascinates me about these churches/mosques is that both religions have used this same space at one time or another, depending who was in power at the time and you can see the mix of these two religions in the paintings and caligraphy on the walls.
Perhaps one day we will get it together, after all dont we all really want the same things!!
