When we first approached the island of Santorini on the ship it looked liked it was capped with snow but of course it was the white villages! Everything on the island is painted white with the church roof tops being blue.
Our thoughts on Greece:
Food is great and pretty cheap, lots of grilled meat and fish to be had here and zatziki, very yummy.
Local beer was $3 euro a pint, Petrol that was expensive at $1.69euro in places.
Places to stay ran about $50 euro per night not including breakfast, Greek coffee you might want to give a miss its not good.
We are really a bit late for the weather and most places were shut for the end of the season so i would recommend not being here any later that Sept30 for the best of it all.
The economy is struggling for sure, you talk to the locals and they are concerned about their jobs etc. they dont seem that chipper, when you smile and wave they usually just give you the glare, that was on kefalonia anyhow, Santorini was friendly and Monamavasia was great too.
Riding thru the mainland on Greece you come across millions of olive trees and hundreds of orange trees, the landscape is very rocky and all the trees you do see are short, not many flowers, its also really dry, when we were there it was rainy with big thunder and lightening storms, very cool.
I would say definately give Greece a visit but stick to the islands, Santorini was beautiful it really was, we didnt go to Athens as we were citied out but everyone said we didnt miss much. We stayed one night on Rhodes at a great place called Casa Antika but we would have liked to stay longer but the ferry for Turkey only left on a Tuesday so we couldnt.
Onto Turkey
