Vientiane the Capital city of Laos

Riding into Vientiane

Vientiane is the capital of Laos, quite a small city for a capital with a population of only 203,000.  Set along the Mekong River with architecture that has been influenced by the French from when they took over the protectorship of Laos in the late 19th and early 20th centuries,  complete with bougainvillea's in full bloom makes for a nice setting for a city.  Full of lots to see from Buddha Parks to the morning market and a rich selection of international cuisine, especially French.  We bumped into a Canadian lady who has been living there for 5 years who filled us in on all the best places to eat and visit.
Lots of rivers run into the Mekong
We usually ride into our destination town and get settled into our guesthouse before venturing out to any sites as its so hot here that being in our gear is not fun, however, this site was a group of caves on our way to Vientiane so we had no choice but to check them out with full riding gear on, hot!

The world peace gong, Im all for this!

Sometimes the English interpretation can be quite funny

Patuxay, built in the 1960's to celebrate
 Laotian Independence

The view from the top of the Patuxay, this really was a lovely square.

I think these guys were looking for a new outfit!
