A very small sign for a great place to see the local
wildlife |

The water filled crater |
“Tower Hill” was formed at least 30,000 years ago when a hot rising basaltic magma came into contact with the subterranean water table. The violent explosion that followed created the funnel shaped crater (later filled by a lake).
Artefacts found in the volcanic ash layers show that Aborigines were living in the area at the time of the eruption.
Tower Hill was declared Victorias first National park in 1892, in an attempt to halt the decline of the once majestic volcano. However, grazing, crop growing, quarrying and rubbish dumping continued and took their toll. By the 1950’s the hills and islands were bare and little wildlife remained.
Tower hill was declared a State Game Reserve in 1961.

A wonderful place to just stand and watch |
Someone had told us that if we wanted to see Koalas in the wild to go check out Tower Hill. Its a side trick off the ocean road but well worth it, you can drive thru the game reserve, there are no gates or fences holding the animals in they just seem to stay put there. We saw some Kangaroos and bird life and then spotted 2 koalas high up in the gum tree, they are quite big and so cute! nice to see them in their own environment.

Or lay around and sun yourself |
