Sorrento, wedged on a ledge between the mountains and the Mediterranean, sitting high up off the water, is a fun little town. It was just big enough to keep us busy with something new each day, we walked around the town one day, took the train for 1 euro each to Pompeii the next and with all the gear off the bike road the Amalfi coast the next day, the best and sunniest day, that was a scary ride. The road is really high off the water, 500’ and alot of the road is actually cantilevered off the side of the mountain.
It was beautiful though and not busy, they say that usually this road is so busy in the prime of the summer that even the locals are not allowed to ride it on certain days for all the congestion.
Its hard to believe that these houses still cling and hang off these mountain faces, there are a few towns as you ride along the coastal road and we dropped down to some of them, little fishing villages and some are ritzy tourist stops.
They still plant grapes in terraces on these cliffs and work the land, as steep and difficult as it is, its funny because I cant see us Westcoasters going to all that work for a few grapes!!
