We definitely did the right thing by booking a hotel outside of Venice, I would of hated to have arrived after the storm and cold weather we were in and then had to park the bike outside Venice and then find our hotel while carrying all the bags in. We stayed in Hotel Paris in Mestre, just a 7min train ride into Venice and for only 1 euro each and the train station was right outside our hotel, perfect.
We loved Venice, right from arriving off the train and stepping out from the station, we were excited to see it, our eyes were going everywhere, there is so much to take in in Venice. The receptionist at our hotel had told us how to see Venice in two days so we followed her instructions, however its easy to get lost in Venice and we did, several times. It was still cold but the sun was shining and the wind had dropped, we just walked and walked in and around alleyways, over bridges, into squares, it was great fun. Not only is there tonnes of shopping to be done here but also you are mesmerized by the buildings and how they are still standing/floating in Venice, the rain the day before had left some flooding behind and you could see water bubbling up from the stone floors you were walking on below your feet.
The gondolas were so fun and colourful and the guys that drove them all dressed up, we really wanted to go for a ride but at $80euro for 40mins it was just too much for our budget, eating and drinking in Venice is already expensive enough. We overheard someone on the train say that “Venice is one of those cities that is exactly like you imagined it to be”, and it was, we certainly were NOT disappointed.
